Most SM1–SM7 housing was built between 1925 and 1939 with hipped tile roofs in red clay or concrete, rendered chimney stacks (often pebble-dashed) and mortar-bedded ridges. The rendered stacks are the weak point — once the render hairlines, water tracks down inside the stack and pushes through the flashings. Repointing rarely fixes a rendered stack; we strip the render, repoint the brick beneath, and re-render with a flexible silicone modified mortar.
