— Overview
What this job actually involves.
A broken slate can't simply be nailed back — the nail head shows on the next course down. The proper fix is to slide a new slate into position and hold it with a copper tingle (a strip bent over the head batten and folded up the bottom of the slate). We carry Welsh blue-grey, Spanish T1 and Brazilian black slate to match almost any London terrace.
— Signs you need this
Five things we look for first.
Triangular slate fragment in the gutter or front garden
Tide mark on a bedroom ceiling under a slate roof
Visible split running from the lower edge upwards
Slate visibly displaced down the slope by 50mm+
Tingles already in place have rusted through (steel not copper)
— Included in the price
A fixed price means a fixed scope.
No hidden extras. Materials, access, disposal and a written guarantee are all in the headline number.
- Slate matched to your existing — Welsh / Spanish / Brazilian
- Broken pieces removed cleanly from the slope
- 0.6mm copper tingle (not steel) cut and folded
- Replacement slate slid in to original gauge and exposure
- Adjacent slates checked for delamination or split
- Before/after photos sent on WhatsApp
— On the day
How we work, step by step.
Slate ripper
Slate ripper slid under the broken slate to cut the nails holding it. Broken pieces removed without disturbing adjacent slates.
Match & dress
New slate selected from our stock — we compare in daylight against your existing weathering. Edges dressed with a slate hammer.
Copper tingle
0.6mm copper strip 25mm wide, hooked over the head batten of the new slate and folded up the bottom edge. Copper because it weathers with the slate.
Slide & sign off
New slate slid into position so the tingle locks it. Photo sent on WhatsApp before we pack down.
— Materials & kit
What we bring to the van.
The unglamorous detail that decides whether a fix lasts five years or twenty-five. We use trade-grade or manufacturer-spec materials only — never builders' merchant own-brand.
- Welsh blue-grey / Spanish T1 / Brazilian slate
- 0.6mm copper tingle strip
- Slate ripper + dressing hammer
- Replacement felt patch if torn

— Frequently asked
3 answers before you book.
How do you know what slate I have?
Welsh has a slightly purple cast in daylight, Spanish is uniformly grey-black, Brazilian is jet black. Send a photo and we'll confirm before we visit.
Are copper tingles visible?
Only on close inspection from ground level. From the street the slate looks identical to the rest of the slope — the copper strip is a fingernail wide.
What if more slates break next month?
If we find delamination across the slope we'll warn you on the day — at that point a full strip and re-slate is more economical than ten individual repairs.
