— Overview
What this job actually involves.
Parapet copings (the flat capping stones on top of a parapet wall) are what stop water entering the head of the wall. When the mortar bed fails or the DPC underneath perishes, water tracks down inside the parapet and shows up as damp on the top-floor wall internally. We lift each coping, replace the DPC, re-bed in lime-modified mortar and seal vertical joints with lead infill.
— Signs you need this
Five things we look for first.
Damp running down inside a parapet wall (top floor)
Visible movement or rock on a coping stone
Mortar joint between copings cracked or missing
Vegetation growing in the joints
Coping visibly displaced or off-line

How we work, step by step.
Lift & number
Each coping lifted in sequence and numbered chalk so it goes back in the same place — useful where they've been hand-cut to match a curve.
Strip & DPC
Old mortar and perished DPC cleared. Fresh 1200ga polyethylene DPC laid full width of the parapet, lapped 100mm at any joint.
Re-bed
Lime-modified mortar trowelled onto the DPC, coping re-laid and tapped level. Excess mortar struck off internal and external faces.
Lead vertical joints
Vertical joints between copings filled with cast lead instead of mortar — lead expands and contracts with the stone, mortar cracks.
— Materials & kit
What we bring to the van.
The unglamorous detail that decides whether a fix lasts five years or twenty-five. We use trade-grade or manufacturer-spec materials only — never builders' merchant own-brand.
- 1200ga polyethylene DPC
- Lime-modified mortar (NHL 3.5 base)
- Cast lead infill
- Replacement coping if cracked

— Frequently asked
3 answers before you book.
Can you replace a broken coping?
Yes — reconstituted concrete copings are stock items. Natural stone we'd source to match. Quoted separately if needed.
Why lead in the joints, not silicone?
Silicone in a parapet joint lasts 5 years. Cast lead lasts the life of the building and accommodates thermal movement.
Is this a regular flat-roof job?
It's adjacent to one — parapets are usually around a flat roof. We often do parapet coping re-bed at the same time as a felt or EPDM re-cover.
